Inspired Writing - the card catalog part two

Literary review - Amazon search results for a library card catalog in books:

1. Simplified Library School Rules; Card Catalog, Accession, Book Numbers, Shelf List, Capitals by Melvil Dewey. Observation: The author seems to be quite the Dewey Decimal nerd based on his other publications listed on Amazon. He is the creator of the Dewey Decimal system which is the system used in libraries to catalog and retrieve books.

2. Access Points to the Law Library Card Catalog Interpretation by Elzabeth Matthews

3. The card catalogs of the Library of Congress: A brief description by Barbara Marietta Westby

Observation: These books in general seem to be pretty obscure, further proving that my subject is a dying breed.

Five interesting facts about the Card Catalog:

1. During the French Revolution playing cards were used instead of index cards in the card catalog.

  1. Heather,
Oh, you've dug up some obscure but awesome resources! So, does the Dewey decimal system live on after the death of the card catalog? Is the digital library changing not only how we access information but how we think of research? What happens when the physical and tangible aspect of books is taken out of the equation? Interesting finds!

  2. Heather,

The card catalog funeral hosted at a library in Danbury, Connecticut could be used in your essay to explore other's connection to card catalogs as a way to discuss others' unique connection to this treasure. Your love story is similar due to the personification of this piece of furniture. Card catalogs are becoming a system of the past as they are replaced by computers and I believe this is an important aspect of your essay.

Also, I think it would be really nice to also include a sense of salvation from the doom that card catalogs can find if they aren't maintained by someone who cares for them (like the case in the basement you bought yours from). These facts provide good side notes to your story of finally owning your own card catalog. Can't wait to see your new draft!
